1. IPSO
IPSO is the Independent Press Standards Organisation. They do the same as the BBFC for movies or PEGI for games. They are the regulatory for editors which make magazines or newspapers, they deal with issues such as harassment, discrimination and privacy that may be in any magazines or newspapers. They use the editors code of practice, this includes accuracy, 'invasion of privacy, intrusion into grief  or shock and harassment'

For my magazine i will adhere to this law by making sure i do not invade anyones personal information in my interviews with an upcoming actor in sheffield. I will also not persist in asking any involuntary questions and not pursuing any answers. I must identify myself and who i represent when i enter a non-public space such as a football ground or a shop.

2.Obscene publications act
Making sure magazines dont publish anything that could be seen as obscene to your target audience (nudity, explicit language, language, depiction of drugs and use of alcohol)

My audience is males and females aged from around 16-50 who live in the sheffield area. From similar magazines i have looked at they could be influenced by the many gigs that are usually featured in their magazines so they could be influenced by things at the gigs such as the music or alcohol.

I will adhere to this law by firstly not using explicit language in my interview and not allowing the interviewee to use any explicit language. When i am photographing any locations i will make sure not to photograph any explicit items such as alcohol or drugs that could influence a teen age audience.

3. Libel law
You are not allowed to publish false information about a person or publish untrue information

I will adhere to this law by making sure in my interview i do not publish any false information or even misread or mishere any information and then publish any untrue information about the actors career or lifestyle. I will also not publish false information about some of the locations that i may be photographing such as the winter gardens or bramall lane.

4.Copyright
It is the protection of a producers intellectual property. In order for another party to use this intellectual property would have to get permissions from the owner e.g Logos, Organisations, Photographs

I will make sure to get permissions for any photos taken in non-public areas or if i use a company logo i will talk to a representative of the company about getting permissions to use it in my magazine.  For my own photos i will not need permissions for them as i took them myself. For my masthead font i will be using a copyright free font so i will not need permission for it.

5. Laws of contempt
You cannot publish content that would pose a risk to the justice in proceedings. It also prevents magazines from publishing that is too sensationalist about a criminal case.

The magazine i am making will be a local magazine, but i will adhere to this law by making sure i do not report on any court proceedings and not say anything that could change the outcome of a proceeding.

Double page spread #1 draft    Sheffield's new rising star

The acting world can be a very daunting  place, it is constantly filled with people competing to get ahead. The work can sometimes be very stale and it can be very hard to get a big break which all actors crave. Wanting to learn more about the competitive and creative industry we sat down with a local sheffield actor by the name of Jonathan Whittington for an insight into his career and the film industry.

After years working in the acting industry John has never been shy of work. His most recent works have included working on short films for students. The work can sometimes be very consuming and can go without pay in some cases but the work can get you recognised and put onto a project that can give an actor their big break into the industry. The process of doing small projects can be a long one but the wait for some is worth it.

With his thunderous debut in his most recent role in the short film Accidental hitman, Jonathan whittingon is poised to take on the acting world. After seeing his outstanding performance we thought the time was right to invite john along for our monthly interview in order for us to understand the ins and outs off the film industry.

Questions to ask john (actor)

At what age would you say you realised that acting was the career you wanted to pursue?

Where did you learn to act?

What would you say is the most enjoyable part of the job?

In contrast to the last question what would you say is the most difficult part of the job?

Whats the best project you've worked on so far ?

Are there any particular roles in that you prefer to play?

What was the first role you played ?

Was there ever a character you found difficult to portray? and if so what was the character?

Are there any areas in which you feel you could improve as an actor?

Are there any projects you're working on currently?

Double page spread #2     Must see spots in sheffield

Sheffield has a vast history that is one of the more fascinating of the may british cities. Its heritage into the steel industry maybe what put sheffield on the map. During the 19th century, Sheffield gained an international reputation for steel production. Many innovations were developed locally, including crucible and stainless steel, fuelling an almost tenfold increase in the population in the Industrial Revolution. Sheffield received its municipal charter in 1843, becoming the City of Sheffield in 1893. International competition in iron and steel caused a decline in traditional local industries in the 1970s and 1980s, coinciding with the collapse of coal mining in the area.

Sheffield is located within the valleys of the River Don and its four tributaries, the Loxley, the Porter Brook, the Rivelin, and the Sheaf. 61% of Sheffield's entire area is green space, and a third of the city lies within the Peak District national park. There are more than 250 parks, woodlands and gardens in the city, and an estimated 2 million trees, giving Sheffield the highest ratio of trees to people of any city in Europe, this is what gave Sheffield the nickname of the greenest city.

The city has a long sporting heritage, and is home to the world's oldest football club Sheffield F.C. Today Sheffield is home to many diverse sports teams for example two league clubs Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United, top flight Ice Hockey Sheffield Steelers and Basketball the Sheffield Sharks Sheffield Eagles is the main rugby league club and operates a level below the Super League.

Photography

Front cover

I would like to pastiche these front covers on my own magazine as I like the way the models are positioned as I believe it looks very natural to the person being photographed and I believe I could incorporate this on to my own front cover. I also like the use of the shot type medium close up as i fell that it shows the models off well. When i take pictures myself i may try to get my actor sat on a stool in various positions, i feel that this is a very classy pose that would show off my model, i fell this would look good on my front cover.

Contents

Id like to pastiche these contents page as they have as i like the use of the wide shots to show off the many stories that would be featured throughout the magazine. They also provide some interesting photographs that couldnt be acheived with any other shot type and i believe they would fit in well on the contents page to entice the reader. Locations that i may try to shoot in could be the sheffield city centre or around chatsworth as i believe that these would make for some good wide shots as they are very interesting and beautiful locations.

Double page spread

What i would like to pastiche these contents pages, as i like the way they start off the article with a large image to really show off what the article is about and they really entice the reader into reading that particular article. For when i take my photos i will try to use MCU and Close up shot types as i feel that these would be appropriate for a interview but i may also use medium and wide shots too. For my article on tourist locations i will mainly use landscape and wide shots in order to truly capture the setting.

LO1 - Examples of exisisting magazines

The reason I chose these 5 magazine covers is firstly because of the layout as it allows the main cover image to stand out on the page. I also like the house style as the colours complement one another and finally how the cover lines have been placed.

I chose these contents pages because firstly they show off an image off the main article therefore enticing the reader into going to read. I also think the many layouts that i have chosen are very well done as the layouts are very sleek and well designed with bold text and good house styles.

The reason i chose these double page spreads is because i find the way they layout their pages very good as i like the way they present their images as well as the information, such as when they have a large image displayed over 1 and a half pages then with a couple paragraphs of information to go along with it.

LO1 - Reader profile

I believe that the typical age for the readers of my magazine would be around the ages of 20-40yrs old and would consist of both genders. I would expect them to live in a urban setting due to the theme of the magazine being Sheffield. I believe that their hobbies and interests could consist of things such as watching films, going to music gigs and local sporting events. They will probably be reading this magazine due to the fact that they live in Sheffield themselves and they will benefit from reading this magazine because they will learn about many things taking place in the city they live in. They will probably buy there magazines from shops such as WHSmiths and would probably buy a copy at least once a month. I feel that my audience would fall under the social classes of E-F as it would be a free magazine.

LO1 - Mindmap of ideas

3 Three reasons why it is beneficial to plan your ideas for our magazine.

1. So that we have an idea of what our magazine will look like before we make it

2. You have a plan to show as evidence for your idea

3. Make sure you know your audience and how to make your magazine appeal to them

LO1 - Prelim task for a college magazine

The purpose of creating a draft of the magazine cover was firstly so that we have a reference to look at when we make our actual magazine cover. Secondly it helps us understand the conventions of a magazine cover and how to use them ourselves.

The reason we chose these measurements (21 x 29.5) for our front cover is because we want it to be the same size as a normal magazine front cover and the reason for the resolution is to get a high quality print image.

Here I am editing my mast head my double clicking on the layer on Photoshop. I then added a stroke to it in order to give the heading a black outline and to make it stand out.

Here I am changing the colour of my mast head to yellow in order to give the magazine a house style, for my house style I chose blue and yellow as these colours contrast and stand out from one another.

Here I have changed the mast head I did this by selecting the layer and double clicking. I then changed it from a stroke to a shadow as I believe his gave the image more depth and made it stand more.
While I was making my front cover I have learnt many things that helped me create this image for example, I learnt how to edit my mast head (title) by double clicking and adding effects to make the mast head seem more like a traditional magazine mast head. I also learnt the conventions of a traditional magazine cover such as mast head, main cover line and cover images. These allowed me to create a magazine that meted the basic conventions of what a traditional magazine should look like. I've also learnt how to rasterize on Photoshop so this will allow me to change colours on shapes in a much easier tool.
